We generally install X Windows on our boxes to make it easier for customers to work with their systems. We've found no perceivable performance issues over the past few years that we've been doing this. I've been fighting for a while to have a system that could run some current software, such as the Green versions of PIAF. Because we found DAHDI and Asterisk Stability problems with Purple.

Does anybody know of a way to use an earlier Centos version (6.4 maybe?) that could still run Asterisk 11 and FreePBX 2.X or better?

The servers that we use have Intel onboard i915 video, which has a "hang" problem with Centos 6.5. It is fixed in the newer Kernel. I even bought some video cards, but then noticed that there were no free slots (oops!).

This is the gift that keeps on giving. PIAF used to be so easy and consistent.

Yeah. I sense that RedHat is trying to keep pace with Ubuntu, and that's forcing them to push bleeding edge stuff out the door quicker. And that is causing issues. CentOS 7, for example, has firewalld which (in Fedora 20) was still in release candidate stage a month ago. That should make everyone a little nervous particularly for production systems. Considering that Red Hat now charges almost double (in the name of "support") for RHEL compared to Microsoft servers, you've got to wonder where all of this is headed...
